Almost every villager in the southeastern Indonesian city of Baubau is capable of writing in Hangul, the Korean alphabet. However, they haven’t learned to write the Korean language. Instead, Hangul is being used to preserve their own indigenous dialect, Cia-Cia. Like most of the over 700 languages spoken in the country, Cia-Cia doesn’t have a proper written system. Cia-Cia speakers have adopted Hangul in an effort to preserve their dying language.
